Caribbean Music Awards

08.24.23

The first-ever Caribbean Music Awards in Brooklyn are finally here. The time has come to celebrate and recognize the Caribbean’s best talent from around the world. Without a doubt, Caribbean music has impacted the global music scene for decades, influencing and inspiring countless artists across genres. From reggae’s laid-back grooves to soca’s frenzied rhythm, Dancehall’s high-energy beats to calypso’s storytelling melodies, the Caribbean has given birth to a rich palette of musical styles that have captivated audiences worldwide.

Caribbean Music Awards in Brooklyn

However, Caribbean music has been overlooked and underappreciated. It’s now time to give back and show gratitude to the Caribbean artists’ community for their contributions to the world. The best part is that they will be celebrated by their peers with a night of celebration organized by Caribbean people. It’s a great feeling to know that from now on, the Caribbean will have its own annual award ceremony, following the example of the BET Awards in the United States.

Thanks to the organizers, the Caribbean Elite Group (CEG), which publishes the print and digital publication “Caribbean Elite Magazine,” for this incredible initiative. The inaugural Caribbean Music Awards ceremony will be hosted by Wyclef Jean on August 31, 2023, at the King’s Theater in Brooklyn, New York. What a perfect city to host this inaugural ceremony, especially since Brooklyn is home to the largest Caribbean population outside of the islands.

The Haitian rapper and musician, a three-time Grammy winner, who will host the event, Wyclef Jean won two Grammy Awards for his work on the Fugees’ 1996 album “The Score” and another as a co-producer of Santana’s “Supernatural,” which won Album of the Year in 1999. Jean, who is 53 years old, was also nominated for a Golden Globe in 2005 for co-writing the song “Million Voices” for the film “Hotel Rwanda.”

Wyclef Jean expressed his excitement about being this year’s host on the Today Show via NBC. The three-time Grammy-winning artist said, “The countdown starts now! It’s a special celebration of Caribbean Music. We’re celebrating music that continues to connect the world through music, fashion, and a whole different level of energy. Get ready to dance, laugh, wave your flags, and make memories! Let’s come together under one roof and showcase the world the legacy of Caribbean Music and culture.”

With that being said, the Caribbean Music Awards announces an impressive lineup of live-show performances featuring many of the genre’s biggest names. The event will take place live at the Kings Theatre in Brooklyn, New York, on August 31, 2023. The electrifying performances will include artists like Alison Hinds, Jada Kingdom, Dexta Daps, Kranium, Nailah Blackman, Ding Dong, Rupee, and Romain Virgo. More surprises are soon to be announced. The show will also feature appearances from Spice, Baby Cham, and Toni-Ann Singh.

With an impressive roster of performances, presenters, and nominees, this extraordinary event promises to be a breathtaking celebration of Caribbean music and entertainment.

Several special awards will be presented during the ceremony. The multitalented soca singer, producer, and songwriter Machel Montano will receive a lifetime achievement award. Reggae star Beres Hammond will also be honored with an Elite Icon Award. The Caribbean Music Awards will honor 26 categories across various genres, including reggae, dancehall, kompa, soca, and zouk.

The top nominee for this year’s awards is the Trini soca group Kes, which has secured five nominations. Masicka, Montano, Ding Dong, and Shenseea are tied for second place with four nominations each.

As a reminder, the Caribbean Music Awards is not just an awards ceremony; it’s a night for the entire Caribbean music and entertainment community to come together in a dazzling display of talent, creativity, and cultural richness. It’s a time to recognize the artists, producers, and industry professionals who have significantly shaped and propelled Caribbean music onto the international stage. But the excitement doesn’t stop there. The Caribbean Music Awards has partnered with the global powerhouse YouTube to bring this extraordinary event to audiences worldwide. Through a live stream on YouTube.com, music enthusiasts from every corner of the globe will have the opportunity to join the festivities, immerse themselves in the energy of the Caribbean, and witness the magic unfold in real time. It’s a chance for fans, both near and far, to be part of this milestone in music.

The awards ceremony will also be live-streamed on YouTube at 8 p.m. ET. Tickets, ranging in price from $60.50 to $161, are available at https://www.kingstheatre.com/events/caribbean-music-awards/tickets.

Don’t miss out on this historic moment of sharing Caribbean culture, no matter where you are in the world. Brooklyn will be the place to be before the kickoff of a festive and frenzied Labor Day weekend. Are you ready to be enchanted by the spirit and magnificence of Caribbean music? The countdown has begun!
