On June 2, 2024, Claudia Sheinbaum made history by becoming the first woman president of Mexico. She won the election with a decisive 58% of the vote, defeating her main rival, Xóchitl Gálvez, who received about 26.6%

Sheinbaum has a wealth of experience, both as a politician who served as mayor of Mexico City until last year, and as an scientist who was part of the United Nations panel of climate scientists that received the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize. She is also the first Jewish person to hold this office in Mexico. Her victory marks a significant milestone in Mexican politics, emphasizing the growing role of women in leadership positions.

During her acceptance speech, Sheinbaum highlighted the collective achievement of women in reaching this historic moment, acknowledging the contributions of female ancestors and contemporary supporters. She expressed her commitment to building a diverse and democratic Mexico, aiming to serve all citizens without distinction,

Sheinbaum is closely associated with the current president, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, and represents the left-wing Morena party. Her campaign focused on continuing the social and economic reforms initiated by López Obrador, which have been credited with lifting millions out of poverty . Her election is seen as a significant step towards gender equality in Mexico and is expected to bring a new perspective to the country’s leadership, particularly in addressing issues related to social justice and environmental sustainability.
