French Cinema Icon Alain Delon Passes Away at 88

The French star actor and heartthrob , known for his roles in La Piscine and The Leopard, passed away at the age of 88, his three children announced on Sunday, August 18th. Few French stars have left such a lasting impression. French cinema is today bidding farewell to one of its icons. Alain Delon has died at the age of 88, his children informed AFP on Sunday, August 18th, 2024.

“Alain-Fabien, Anouchka, Anthony, as well as [his dog] Loubo, are deeply saddened to announce the passing of their father. He passed away peacefully at his home in Douchy, surrounded by his three children and loved ones. (…) His family kindly requests that their privacy be respected during this extremely painful time of mourning,” the statement read.

Alain Delon was a cinema legend, whose beauty and magnetism captivated some of the greatest directors, such as Luchino Visconti, René Clément, and Jean-Pierre Melville. He became one of the most popular actors in French cinema, beginning his career in the 1950s at the age of 22. Over the years, he starred in nearly 90 acclaimed films, including Purple NoonBorsalinoLe Samouraï, and La Piscine.

He also built a strong international reputation, particularly through his roles in The Leopard and Rocco and His Brothers, both directed by the renowned Italian filmmaker Luchino Visconti. His talent was notably recognized in 1985 when he won the César Award for Best Actor for the film Our Story.

In May 2019, he received an honorary Palme d’Or for his entire career at the Cannes Film Festival. In recent years, Alain Delon had become a rare presence on screen, but he made headlines in recent months due to legal complaints filed by his three children against his companion, Hiromi Rollin. A family dispute over the star’s health also emerged, involving all three of his children.
